The story behind the sound

From Chris’s studio to the airwaves.

A Saturday-night link from Chelleston

In its account of the 1996 broadcasts, the Rockhouse Project memoir recalls a practical problem: the club’s bass shook the building too much for the on-site studio. An outside-broadcast transmitter at Chris’s house in Chelleston let Chris and Mick Usher present the Saturday-night rock show from his home studio.

The memoir’s account of RSL2 in 1998 says BEACH’s Basement continued from Chris’s studio, with occasional guests, listener requests and phone calls.

Behind the artwork

Mick’s mark on the station

Mick was part of the programme as well as the artist behind its poster. The Rockhouse memoir also credits him with the Future logo, Freestyle flyer and promotional artwork for the club and radio project.

The original Basement poster survives here with its Saturday-night slot and 105.8 FM lettering intact.
